GENERAL INFORMATION
J.-S.Co. VNIITRANSMASH is a complex scientific centre of mobile vehicle engineering. It has been founded in 1949 on the basis of a pilot plant that developed tanks and self-propelled mountings during the world war II. Since that time the institute activity was mainly directed to development of military track vehicles. All presently existing military track vehicles have been developed, using technical ideas of the institute specialists.

Since early sixties a new direction of works was opened for VNIITRANSMASH, it was space robotics. The first result obtained in this direction was a development of the automatic chassis for the world's first "Lunokhod-1" and "Lunokhod-2". Further VNIITRANSMASH has been participating almost all projects related to exploration of solar system planets carried out in our country.

When an industrial conversion started, VNIITRANSMASH began to perform developments related to railway transport and vehicles for municipal services.

In 1992 in connection with a general reform of Russian economy VNIITRANSMASH was transformed from a state enterprise to a joint-stock company.



GENERAL INFORMATION ON VNIITRANSMASH DEVELOPMENTS IN SPACE FIELD
Since 1963 VNIITRANMASH has been engaging in development and testing products of space exploration are:

- Study of the problems related to motion and control of mobile robots intended to operate on the Moon, Mars, Phobos surfaces; development of flight models and running mock-ups of such types robots;

- Exploration of physical and mechanical properties of the Moon, Mars, Venus and Phobos soils with devices developed;

- Design and development of turnable devices intended to be used on orbital station and spacecrafts, in particular, high-precise platforms for guidance and stabilisation of payloads (e.g. scientific equipment, antennae etc.);

- Simulation of operational conditions for planet rovers and other space systems;

- Procedure and equipment for tribotechnical study and testing the space engineering products;

- Ensuring of operational efficiency of friction pairs used in space systems.
